During the diagnostics study, it was observed that the artisans are engaged mainly in job work. They are dependent on the traders /middleman to a large extent. The middlemen provide raw materials and designs to the artisans and take back the finished products. It was also observed that the working conditions are not conducive for the artisans. They also face challenges related to raw material, design and marketing. Wood carving is another major craft of J&K. Carved walnut wood work is among the most important crafts of Kashmir.
