HMCM holds a Buyer-Seller Meet to promote Kashmiri crafts

The Handicrafts Mega Cluster Mission, an innovative programme of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India in association with Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India held a buyer-seller meet and thematic exhibition of Kashmiri handicrafts. The event was held at Sher-E-Kashmir International Convention Centre, Srinagar on June 13 & 14th June 2015.  The event was attended by 35 artisans from all the craft pockets of Kashmir while approximately 20 buyers and e-retailers from across the country travelled to Srinagar for participating in this important program.

The event was inaugurated by Chief Guest Dr. SK Panda, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles in the august presence of Shri Khurshid A. Ganai, Financial Commissioner, Industries and Commerce Department, Govt. of J&K. who stressed on the need of inclusive development, modernization and marketing to ensure that the craftspersons manage to get the maximum remuneration for the hard work and craftsmanship. Shri Navraj Goyal, Additional Development Commissioner, Shri Kuldip Wattal, Chairman, Carpet Export Promotion Council, Shri R.K.Srivastava, Executive Director-NCDPD and CEO-HMCM was also present at the event.

Today there is an urgent need for integrated & inclusive development of crafts of this region by way of implementing various activities like capacity development of the artisans of this region, design & product development, creation of infrastructure and national & international marketing of these crafts. HMCM is trying to bridge the gap and ensure that the crafts continue to grow and manage to get to the markets.

Jammu & Kashmir Region enjoys a pride of place in the country with its rich heritage of artistic craftsmanship.  The crafts of this region are almost entirely oriented to locally available raw materials.  The major craft categories which are practiced in the region are Carpets, Shawls, Chain Stitch & Crewel Embroidery, Wood Carving,  Namda, Paper Machie and so on.
